collect and check news from grassroot sources and are now providing the service to both Irish and international media groups. Paula Cunniffe spent a day inside Storyful.

Made in Ireland

Made in Ireland is a 13 part radio series, presented by Ella McSweeney, which tells the stories of what we used to make in this country, and how such traditions and skills are continuing today. Its the story of Irelands manufacturing past, present and future. The series will be broadcast live on the Today with Pat Kenny Show on RTE Radio 1, and on RTE Digital. Episode 13 presented by Ella McSweeney. Until the 1700s in Ireland, fallow and the native Red deer had two predators to worry about: wolves and humans. Along with wolves, weve hunted deer for millenia a recognition of the value of venison meat thats extremely low in fat, but packed full of protein and iron.
But that was then. Today, not only do we have more deer than ever, but we also have two possible three or four new species that have naturalised in the countrywide. And somehow, along the way, venison has come to be regarded as an elite meat expensive to buy, difficult to cook a meat for the well heeled. Strange for a prolific, wild animal. In the final episode of the Made in Ireland feature, Ella goes deer hunting in Wicklow with Killrudderys gamekeeper, Angus Lee. He shows her the method of deer stalking. Ella is joined by butcher Ed Hick who has been hunting since he was a child. He cooks some venison for her in the forest and tells her why its still considered an elite meat.

Episode 12 presented by Ella McSweeney. Twenty years ago, there were 1000 abattoirs across the country. Today, there are 200 left and of them, only a small amount are small scale abattoirs connected to local butcher shops. While we may think of our local butcher as someone who is inextricably linked to the local farmer, increasingly this is not the case. The butcher who sources the animals, kills them, butchers the meat and sells at the counter is slowly but surely becoming an exception in Ireland, rather than the rule.
So what of this breed of traditional Irish butcher? In this programme, Ella speaks to Frank Murphy, a 2nd generation butcher who owns the last butcher and abattoir in Midleton, Co. Cork. She also talks to Franks 94 year old father Dan about his memories of selling meat in the 1950s and 60s.

Its the story of Irelands manufacturing past, present and future. The series will be broadcast live on the Today with Pat Kenny Show on RTE Radio 1, and on RTE Digital. Episode 11 presented by Ella McSweeney. It was in April last year that Carrickmacross was on the lips of people around the world, as Kate Middleton walked up the aisle for her wedding to Prince William, wearing a lace bodice and skirt that was hand-stitched using the lacemaking technique which originated in Co. Monaghan in the 1820s. When it comes to lace making, Ireland is on the map - particularly Carrickmacross and Limerick lace. But there is another tradition of lace making a unique way of making lace that was nearly lost to a new generation of lacemakers. The story starts in 1845 in Youghal when Mary Anne Smyth of the Presentation
Convent unpicked some Venetian point lace and created her own style of lacemaking, which she called Youghal Lace. That was then, and by the 1980s the tradition of making Youghal Lace was all but forgotten until a lace expert called Veronica Stuart revived it. In this Made in Ireland, Ella meets Veronica to hear her story.

Poitin is long associated with illegality: first outlawed back in 1661, it was relatively recently, in 1997, when the Revenue Commissioners permitted the licensed sale of it within Ireland.

So what of poitin making today? Ella meets Mairtin MacConrai, a part time farmer from Leitir Moir, Connemara. Fifty years ago he made poitin with his father. It was a secretive affair, done mainly at night in the forests nearby, and the entire process would take up to 3 weeks.

Ella also meets Alex Chasko, head distiller at Cooley Distillery who has created a new poitin for sale. Its a limited edition run of 1,000 bottles and the poitin is 65% alcohol. The general manager of the Kilbeggan plant, Brian Quinn, gives Ella a taste of the mountain tay.

They spend their days eating the grass, their nights sleeping on the edge of the rock which is 100 feet up with a panoramic view of the city. These are the Bilberry Goat herd and they have lived on the rock for over 300 years.

As of January next year, cheese from their milk will be on the market. Ella visits the herd in the company of herdsman Martin Doyle who milks them each morning and each evening with a mobile milker. He first saw the herd in 1967 when he was just 7 years old and since then, he has looked after them. In 2005 he registered the herd with the Department of Agriculture and it was only a few months ago that he decided to make cheese from their milk, just as was done by milkmaids at the beginning of the 20th Century.

Ella visits Helen Finnegan of Knockdrinna Farm in Kilkenny, who gets the milk from Martin and makes the cheese. She recently made her second batch of Bilberry Cheese and it will go on sale to the public in January.

The art of making hats, or millinery, is hundreds of years old. In Philip Tracey, Ireland has produced arguably the most successful milliner in the world. But there are many milliners around the country and in her continuing look at all things Made in Ireland, Ella McSweeney meets two milliners Rebekah Patterson in Kilkenny and John Shevlin in Dublin.

Rebekah Patterson came to Ireland in 2000. Her grandfather, from Ballyferriter in Kerry, emigrated from Ireland to Australia in 1921 and she returned to find her roots. By that time, she was a trained milliner and in 2006 she set up her own studio in Kilkenny, from where she sells her hats.

The cold gleam of silver wasnt just irresistible to the people of the Viking Age, but to generations of the Irish ever since. So said the late UCD historian Francoise Henry who recognised that if theres one metal thats strongly associated with the Irish, its silver. From early Christian church chalices, to 18th century forks, to contemporary earrings and necklaces the use of silver by craftsmen and women in Ireland has a long history.
But it has been difficult to keep the craft of silversmithing alive. Its thought there are about 12 silversmiths left in the country. Ella McSweeney has visited two of them Seamus Gill and Cork based Eileen Moylan.

Made in Ireland

What are the crafts and skills that say something about our culture, our heritage and our sense of being Irish? What stories do the people who practiced these skills have to tell, and how have these skills and traditions been passed on to new generations of Irish people?

Made in Ireland is a 13 part radio series, presented by Ella McSweeney, which tells the stories of what we used to make in this country, and how such traditions and skills are continuing today. Its the story of Irelands manufacturing past, present and future. The series will be broadcast live on the Today with Pat Kenny Show on RTE Radio 1, and on RTE Digital. Episode 5 presented by Ella McSweeney. Pain Blanc, Waterford-style
A small, round, white floury bap tells the story of the French Huguenots who arrived in Waterford in the late 1600s. Persecuted in France, they came to east Ireland and set up industries such as linen making, but it was their bakers who inspired the local people. White flour, imported from France, was used to make pain blanc white bread. The locals loved it so much, they made it their own. Today, over 20,000 Waterford Blaas are made every day and Dermot Walsh, a third generation baker whose family have been making bread since the 1920s, is a dab hand at the Blaa.

Hide and Sow: Leather-working in Ireland
Its no surprise that Ireland used to export vast quantities of leather hide across Europe. Shoes, saddles, sofas - our leather was in demand. But today, there are no tanneries left in the country and only a handful of people are working with leather. Ella meets Willie Power, who spent decades working in Portlaw Tannery in Waterford; she also talks to Paul Ronan who ran the last tannery in Ireland. George Tutty is one man who uses leather every day - for 60 years his family has handmade shoes in Kildare. Ella meets him to find out more.

Microwaved Wood - When you burn wood in the absence of oxygen, whats left is a powerful substance that can burn at 2,700 degrees Celsius. Not only that, but Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci would have been lost without it, it makes soils more productive, and it can be used in tablet form to aid digestion. Charcoal wasnt produced in traditional earth kilns in Ireland until the early 20th century. The practice dates back over 1,000 years and today, charcoal production is having a comeback. Liam OSullivan from Durrow, Co. Laois shows Ella how he makes charcoal for fuel and for drawing, while Niall Kenny takes her to a site where one of Irelands most impressive charcoal pits was excavated in Westmeath.

Field of Dreams - Club Heroes

The clash of the ash and the pride of local clubs. It's been a golden age for Portumna GAA and its legendary hurlers, All Ireland Club
Champions for the last two years and pushing for a third title in 2010. In Club Heroes we meet the champion hurlers of Portumna and find out why,
for many players, a club victory is even more important than a county title. As team player Leo Smith puts it 'for a small town like Portumna theres a great buzz around the place. I mean you've grown up with these guys. You'd die for each other out there. It means so
much to be out there and representing your club, your county, your province.' In this radio feature we hear the story of Portumna
from the players themselves, a story of brothers, like the famous Canning brothers including team captain and corner back Ollie Canning.
It's been a golden decade for the club which is now considered one of the most successful teams in the country. The senior hurlers have
just celebrated their 3-in-a-row county victory and are aiming for another 3-in-a-row in the All-Ireland Finals. Given that the Club only gained
senior status in 1992 its success has been phenomenal. In this special documentary we meet senior team manager, Johnny Kelly, captain Ollie
canning and players Leo Smith and Eoin Lynch. For Ollie the bond between the team players is as close, if not closer, than brothers. 'I know if
any of the lads where in trouble I'd stand up for them same as I'd stand up for the brothers'. The spirit that binds them together is, they say,
more than sport, its about family, locality and belonging. The sense of pride when they bring home the cup is often better than All Ireland county
titles. 'Its what we dream about since we were young lads' says Leo Smith 'hurling together in the under 10, under 12. Running out with
your club mates that's what it's all about'.

Field of Dreams - Sister Act

In Sisters Act we meet two sets of competitive sisters; the Ffrench O'Carroll twins, Rebecca and Charlotte, in athletics and the Murphy sisters,
Annalise and Claudine, in sailing. Two different sports but both sets of sisters have their eyes on one prize, the Olympic Games, but to get there may
well mean having to beat their own sister. For athletic champions Rebecca and Charlotte Ffrench O'Carroll there's never any problem finding
someone to train with or run against. They're identical twins who both compete in cross country, middle and long distance races and have
grown up in their sport together. The girls, now 20, started running at school and were coached by Dundrum South Athletic Club coach Eddie
McDonagh. For the twins it's never a case of sibling rivalry; 'its almost like you feel you're not racing for yourself, you're racing for your twin
to win as well,' says Charlotte. For Ian O Riordan of the Irish Times the girls have the mark of champions and compared their track record to
date with legendary stars like Sonia O Sullivan. In this radio special we hear the story of the girls, their coach and their decision to go stateside
to advance their athletics. Sonia O'Sullivan says it's these coming years which will prove decisive while coach Eddie McDonagh
says athletes like Sonia didn't reach their stride until their mid twenties so much can be expected from the twins and their hopes for the next two
Olympic Games in 2012 and 2016. The challenge of sisterly competition in a completely difference sport is what we hear from
the Murphy sisters whose mother Cathy McAleevy, competed for Ireland in the sport they now follow, the single handed women's laser.
Claudine and Annalise know that if they are to make the Olympic Games for Ireland that theirs is a sport in which only one woman can be
selected so it may well be they are competing against each other for that place. But that does not divide them. 'We'll push for each, we're
both going to strive to be the best' says Annalise and they support each other in their efforts to win. We hear from their coach
Rory Fitzgerald, their mum Cathy and from Ireland's Olympic competitor Ciara Peelo who carried the Irish flag at the Beijing Games.

Field of Dreams - Count Us In

March 21st is International Day against Racism and this feature showcases how sport can unite and cross all boundaries that divide us.
In Count Us In we hear the story of how a sports initiative in Dublin's inner city primary schools is not just introducing children to new sports but
encouraging and promoting multi-racial play and integration. 'Count Us In' is run by Sport Against Racism in Ireland, SARI, with boys and girls in
primary schools in Dublin's heartland, Dublin 8, the Liberties. This radio feature follows the project through its run across Spring 2009, and find
out how sports unites and what the children think of it. As the project gets underway again this year we hear the voices of former Ireland manager,
Brian Kerr who talks about his own deep commitment to SARI and we get the story from SARI's founders Frank Buckley and Ken McCue.
One of the players who has come through SARI's soccer league Emecka Onwubiko shares his story, coming to Swords as a boy of 11 from
Nigeria and his pride in playing for Ireland in the U19 team. For Brian Kerr the work SARI does in schools is even more essential in a recession
 when the concept of integration may become more challenging. But like many he's concerned about funding and state commitment;
'the big thing for SARI is survival because obviously funding and resources are very scarce these days. Without funding we can't sustain our
efforts or continue to roll out events like the schools programme'. The real stars of 'Count Us In' are the children who share their stories and

The Dead; 15 Usher's Island, Joyce's Dublin 1904.

We start at 15 Usher's Island, the house at the centre of the Misses Morkan's Epiphany dinner party
on January 4th 1904. Set in a Dublin of 300,000 souls, on a bitter cold night, we are looking out across the river
to the west to the Phoenix Park and to the east towards the Four Courts. As the story begins, Lily, the
over-worked housemaid, opens the door. What does the story tell us about Dublin in 1904? Professor Mary Daly
helps us step back in time while Professor Kevin Whelan connects The Dead to Dublin's history, geography
and landscape. What do the archives hold and tell us about not just Joyce's Dublin but also about his own
life story? We visit the National Archives and the census records of 1901 with Catriona Crowe while Katherine
McSharry opens the National Library collection. Architect Sean O'Laoire helps us imagine Joyce's Dublin and
shares the story of the house itself, 15 Usher's Island.

The Dead; Why The Story Resonates.

TS Eliot described it as one of the greatest short stories ever written. James Joyce finished the
final story in his collection Dubliners, The Dead, in Trieste 1907. This story of the Misses Morkan's annual
gathering of family, friends and music students is framed by the elderly sisters' nephew Gabriel Conroy and his
wife Gretta and a personal epiphany triggered by the fragment of a song. Professors Declan Kiberd, Anne Fogarty
and Gerardine Meaney help us unpack the story and find out why it has such resonance and power. Dr Luca Crispi,
working on the Joyce papers at the National Library, shows how the manuscripts illuminate how
 Joyce wrote.

The Dead; Looking East or West?

Joyce described The Dead as a ghost story. The ghost of Michael Furey, who as Gretta says
'died for me' haunts the final scenes. But the story also echoes with the ghosts of Irish history and politics.
Professor Kevin Whelan peels back the layers and references from the Battle of the Boyne, the 1798 rebellion,
O'Connell's Catholic Emancipation, Parnell's Home Rule and the tension in early 20th Century Ireland between
the emerging Gaelic Nationalist movement and the Catholic middle classes. Social historian Mary Daly places
the story in its contemporary politics and illuminates what is going on behind the dance scene between Gabriel
and Molly Ivors when her final retort is 'West Briton'. We look at the physical landscape of the story and
the map it draws from the Wellington Monument to the O'Connell statue and the tensions between east and west
both for the characters and the country. What is Joyce telling us? The past is ever present in The Dead and the
party itself takes on a wake like quality not just for a marriage but for a city as well.

The Dead: Distant Music and The Lass of Aughrim.

The Dead is rich in music from Italian opera to popular folk songs. Music and song is the soundtrack
to the dinner party while the conversation around the table shares stories of Enrico Caruso and the music halls of
the city. The story's epiphany hangs on a memory provoked by a song 'The Lass of Aughrim'. Professor
Harry White unpacks the power of music in Joyce's narrative and we discover how central a force music
and song was in the author's life. Professor White sees the story itself as an operatic composition. We visit
the National Library to see sheet music of the day and from the UCD folklore collection we hear Elizabeth Cronin's
version of 'The Lass of Aughrim' which gives us a sense of how the song sounded in 1904. Singer and musician Noel
O Grady, who performs the music of Joyce, shares his rendition of 'The Lass of Aughrim' as he plays the part
of Bartell D'Arcy and re-creates that moment which froze Gretta on the stairs of 15 Usher's Island.

The Dead; Sex, love and longing at The Gresham Hotel.

At the end of the night we leave 15 Usher's Island and follow Gabriel and Gretta Conroy's journey up
river and down O'Connell St (then Sackville Street) to the Gresham Hotel. With Professor Anne Fogarty we re-visit
the Gresham Hotel and Gabriel's own moment of self-revelation. Gerardine Meaney and Declan Kiberd explore
the story's love stories and how they relate to Joyce and his own life's love, Nora Barnacle. Love and loss
are intertwined in the personal epiphanies in 'The Dead' and through the archives we look at what was happening
in Joyce's own life with the death of his mother May and his family's decline into poverty. Declan Kiberd,
Gerardine Meaney, Kevin Whelan and Anne Fogarty explore the story's ending and that final scene of a snow covered
Ireland. Is it one of despair or hope?

The Dead: a walking tour with Barry McGovern.

James Joyce's short story 'The Dead' is set in the heart of Dublin City on January 6th 1904. As part of
our audio podcast series Barry McGovern takes a walk through the city of 'The Dead' and explores the landscape
which frames the story from 15 Usher's Island to the Gresham Hotel on O'Connell Street. What remains of Joyce's
Dublin today and what inspired his locations? 'The Dead' brings us on a journey from the quays on the River
Liffey looking towards the Phoenix Park and references a city which can still be found today. Have a look at our
slideshow of photographs from the National Library collections and from Dublin today to get a sense of

'A cheeky city' is how one developer describes Galway in the final part of our Urban Beauty, Urban Blight cities series. One of our smaller cities, Galway remains charming and cultural but like Dublin it suffers from an expanding waistline with apartment blocks stretching out the coast road. Leo Moran of the Saw Doctors bemoans the loss of identity in Galway while former Minister Michael D Higgins waxes lyrical about his native town.
